Enrique Speaks With His Hands

As an author of children's books, Benjamin Fudge's goal is to write the kind of stories that he would have chosen to read to his own children or his elementary school students.

Enrique Speaks With His Hands, is just that kind of book.

Based on a true story from a friend's work in Honduras, Enrique Speaks With His Hands tells the story of a young boy, born deaf in a rural village where deafness is not understood.  His family, while loving him, does not understand him and is unable to provide him with the help he needs.    A stranger one day comes to the village into Enrique's home.  She meets with Enrique's mother and together they bring Enrique to classes where he meets other deaf children and begins to learn sign language.  Along with the gift of language comes the gift of understanding from both family and the villagers.

Beautifully illustrated by Tim Edmonson, this book becomes a journey into rural central America.

On this journey, one hears a story that fosters concern and understanding
for those seen as "different,"
taking the reader into a new and multicultural experience.
